I'm sure glad yesterday afternoon is over with. I left work at 3:00, and walked to Gateway Dental which is now on the ground floor, 2nd avenue level, of the Wells Fargo Center. No more high views from my dentist office. Boo! There are literally no windows in any of their rooms at all anymore, since they moved from the 16th floor of the Seattle Municipal Building.

I walked in and was asked how I was doing. "Ready to get this over with," I said. I said exactly the same thing to the dentist herself when she came to give me my filling. My appointment was at 3:30 but it was 3:45 before they called me back. Once that happened, though, the dentist was mercifully quick and efficient.

Soothing, even. She was very compassionate when I inevitably started breathing heavily. I kind of have no other option when someone sticks a syringe in my mouth. Gah. But she spoke to me very calmly, and suggested I tap by fingers and/or wiggle my toes as a way of distracting my brain while she did it. No one had ever said that to me before, and I actually found it helpful. She also suggested I relax my back and my neck, because I was clearly completely stiffening up. And then, as always, it was over in a matter of moments. Even the whole process of getting the filling done, once the upper left portion of my mouth was numb, didn't seem to take more than maybe twenty minutes.

She told me my mouth would be numb for another couple of hours -- this was around maybe 4:15. I had a movie to see at 6:00. I walked home from there, feeling slightly nauseated, and then nuked a couple of leftover samosas and took them with me to the movie to eat once my mouth had full sensation again. The dentist cautioned me not to chew any food before then, as I could bite my lip or mouth without realizing it.

And so much for it only taking a couple of hours: it was 8:00 before sensation had returned well enough for me to feel okay eating something. I was sure glad to break into my little plastic box of samosas, though.

The movie I saw was The Lost City of Z, which I really thought would be better. Nearly everything about it was great -- the acting, the cinematography, the editing -- except the story itself. It just wasn't told in a way that elevated it any higher than "pretty good." To me that averaged out to a solid B. I'm fine with having seen it; wouldn't particularly recommend it to anyone. It's too bad, as it clearly took a lot of effort to get that movie made. I was in a theatre with maybe three other people, though. It was a 6:00 show on a Tuesday night, but still.

I walked home after it ended around 8:30 and wrote the review, going to bed soon thereafter.

I've been thinking about how my Birth Weeks are a bit too heavily reliant on just having meals with friends and family -- I basically just eat and drink my way through the whole week. I've decided I want to try a new angle on it from now on, a way to add more activity that doesn't only involve restaurants and bars. I generally do manage this on two or three days of the week each year, but I want it to be more characterized by a connecting theme each year.

It's early yet so this could change, but I think I have come up with a good idea for a theme to apply for next year: a tour of the city's botanical gardens, many of which, I discovered when looking at the Seattle Met magazine at the dentist office yesterday, I actually still have not seen. A few that I have are perfectly nice enough to see again, perhaps with friends who have not. A garden for every day, or at least most days! Maybe two in a given day! I like this idea very much, and then will have to come up with a bunch of places to see with a similarly unifying theme the year after, and beyond.
